Enclosure Type and General Description
Type 1 General Purpose Indoor Enclosures - Type 1 enclosures are intended for use indoors, primarily to prevent accidental contact of personnel with the enclosed equipment, in areas where unusual service conditions do not exist. New-Com’s NEMA 1’s are described in series N1. New-Com’s enclosures of any other NEMA type also meet NEMA Type 1.
Type 3R Dust-Tight, Rain-Tight and Sleet Resistant Outdoor - Type 3R enclosures are intended for use outdoors to protect the enclosed equipment against wind-blown dust and water. They are not sleet-proof (iceproof). They shall have conduit hubs or equivalent provisions for watertight connections at the conduit entrance, and provisions for locking. Ordering a Series N12 (NEMA 12) and Series N4 (NEMA 4) with the addition of a Series DS (Drip shield) will meet Type 3R requirements.
Type 4 Water-Tight, Dust-Tight – Indoor and Outdoor - Type 4 enclosures are intended for use indoors or outdoors to protect the enclosed equipment against splashing water, seepage of water, falling or hose-directed water and severe external condensation. They are sleetresistant but not sleet-proof (ice-proof).
Type 4X Water-Tight, Dust-Tight and Corrosion Resistant – Indoor and Outdoor Type 4X enclosures have the same provisions as Type 4 enclosures. In addition they are corrosion resistant.
Type 12 Industrial Use Dust-Tight and Drip-Tight Indoor - Type 12 enclosures are intended for use indoors or outdoors to protect the enclosed equipment against fibers and flying lint, dust and dirt and light splashing, seepage, dripping and external condensation of corrosive liquids. Doors shall be provided with oil-resistant gasket.
